The Summer of Smoothie Bowls // What I Love to Put in My Bowls + Some of My Favorite Combinations!

Hello and happy Monday! I’m super excited to share some of my favorite smoothie bowl combinations with you all! I think smoothie bowls are the most pretty, fun, and colorful way to squeeze a nutritious meal into your day. There’s so many different ways you can be creative with smoothie bowls. Although I do have my go-to favorites, I love mixing it up and creating something a little different with each one.

For your bowl, you can use any sturdy bowl and my favorite kind to use is this one from Coconut Bowls. I also sometimes like to use a fresh coconut, pineapple, or watermelon for my “bowl” if I’m feeling extra fun. The key to getting your smoothie bowls to be thick and creamy is using mostly frozen fruit and only a teeny bit of blending liquid. You might be able to get away with using no liquid with a fancy shmancy blender like the Vitamix. If I tried that with my blender it would probably burst into flames and explode, so I always use a little bit of liquid to blend the smoothie. My blending liquids of choice are water, coconut water, coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk, or orange juice.

For my acai bowls, I use Sambazon frozen acai. I always add some form of fresh or frozen berries like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and/or blackberries. Bananas are a MUST because they give smoothie bowls so much flavor and extra creaminess! Other fruits I throw into the mix are some combination of pineapple, mango, kiwi, passionfruit, peaches, oranges, dragonfruit, and pomegranate. I try to add in at least a little bit of green to all of my smoothies and do so with the addition of spinach, kale, mint, avocado, cucumbers, spirulina powder, and/or moringa powder. Other yummy/nutrient-dense staples I use are oats, ground flax, ground chia, beet powder, pitaya powder, and protein powder. Last but not least, I polish it off with a scoop of my collagen powder + a tablespoon of MCT oil as a quick and easy way to get these important supplements in for the day.

Toppings are the best part of smoothie bowls because they really make them “pop” and come to life! For my toppings, I like to add some of the fruits I listed above along with superfoods like coconut (chips, flakes, or shredded), granola, muesli, almonds, goji berries, cacao nibs, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and/or bee pollen. Additional toppings you can use for extra sweetness and flavor are peanut butter, almond butter, Nutella, honey, or agave nectar.
